Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw for 307 yards against the Falcons, surpassing Dan Marino's season record of 5,084 passing yards, set in 1984.

Drew Brees set the N.F.L. record for passing yards in a season Monday night, breaking a mark that Dan Marino had held for 27 years, and the New Orleans Saints clinched the N.F.C. South title with a 45-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at the Superdome.
Brees had 307 yards and 4 touchdown passes, the last a 9-yard strike to Darren Sproles that set the record with 2 minutes 51 seconds remaining.
It was Brees’s final pass of the game, and it gave him 5,087 yards this season — with one game still to play. As Sproles spiked the ball, Brees put his arm over his head and started walking toward midfield while the Superdome crowd went wild and his teammates chased him down.
Brees’s four touchdown passes gave him 276 for his career, moving him ahead of Joe Montana (273) and Vinny Testaverde (275) for ninth all time. He is the first quarterback in N.F.L. history to pass for more than 5,000 yards twice; he had 5,069 in 2008, falling 15 short of Marino’s mark.
Brees’s first scoring pass went for 8 yards to Marques Colston and the second for 9 yards to Jimmy Graham. In the third quarter, Brees hit Robert Meachem for a score from 24 yards, giving New Orleans a 28-10 lead.
The Saints also had 463 total yards, giving them 6,857 for the season and breaking the 2008 club record of 6,571. New Orleans continues to close in on the league record of 7,075 offensive yards in a season, set by the 2000 St. Louis Rams.
Brees might have broken the record in the third quarter if not for Sproles’s 92-yard kickoff return, which set up John Kasay’s 29-yard field goal. Brees also was intercepted twice, once in the Falcons end zone, but New Orleans was still dominant enough to take a comfortable lead.
The game became a romp when Julio Jones was stripped by Scott Shanle and Malcolm Jenkins returned the ball 30 yards for a score to make it 38-16 in the fourth quarter. The Superdome crowd was in full celebration by then, but the play also meant fans would have to wait until later in the fourth quarter before Brees would get another chance to break Marino’s record.
PETERSON MAY RETURN SOONER The Minnesota Vikings revised their timetable for running back Adrian Peterson’s recovery from left knee surgery, saying they think he will be ready to start the 2012 season.
Peterson will have surgery in 7 to 10 days for torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, said Eric Sugarman, the Vikings’ head trainer.
Peterson was hurt Saturday against the Washington Redskins. The Vikings originally said they did not expect Peterson, who was signed to a seven-year, $100 million contract extension before the first week of the season, to be ready for the start of the next season.(AP)
JAGUARS LOSE TWO MORE Jacksonville placed cornerback Ashton Youboty (hamstring) and defensive end Matt Roth (concussion) on injured reserve, giving it a league-high 31 players on the list.

TICKET PUSH IN CINCINNATI The Cincinnati Bengals made a buy-one, get-one-free offer to season-ticket holders for the final regular-season game Sunday in an effort to fill Paul Brown Stadium for a game against the Baltimore Ravens. Cincinnati (9-6) can clinch a wild-card playoff berth by beating Baltimore (11-4). The challenge is to fill the 65,500-seat stadium, which has been one-third empty for most games this season.
The Bengals have sold out one home game, when Pittsburgh visited. Cincinnati sold 41,273 tickets for a victory over Arizona on Saturday. (AP)

除了在資訊科技界包辦頭兩位，在法律界全取 30席的泛民團隊中，港大法律系學者張達明得票最高，有 1,410票；其次是大律師公會前會長陳景生，得 1,320票。泛民主派在高等教育界的 24人團隊也全數勝出，以公民黨學者鄭宇碩戰績最佳，獲 1,903票，以些微票數力壓排在其後的黨友關信基教授。

President France A. Córdova will visit Hong Kong and Singapore before she passes the baton next summer. An internationally recognized astrophysicist, Dr. Córdova has promoted Purdue's "New Synergies Strategic Plan" since 2008 to "launch tomorrow's leaders, discover with delivery, and meet global challenges," which has helped place our alma mater among one of the top 25 public universities in the U.S. Before becoming Purdue's 11th president in July 2007, she was NASA's Chief Scientist, Vice-Chancellor at Santa Barbara, University of California, and Chancellor at Riverside, UC.

Joining her in the Hong Kong visit will be Mr. Christian Foster, Purdue's First Gentleman and Director of Discovery Park K-12 Education Programs; Dr. Arden Bement, Director for Global Policy Research Institute at Purdue; Ms. Cheryl Altinkemer, Associate Vice President for Advancement; and Ms. Mary Dennis, Vice President of Administration and Corporate Secretary, Purdue Alumni Association.

PCHK will hold a reception and dinner in honor of President Córdova on Thursday, 1 December 2011. The venue will be at Peking Garden, Basement Floor, Alexandra House, 18 Chater Road, Central, Hong Kong (telephone 2526-6456). Reception will start at 7:00 p.m., and dinner at 7:30 p.m. The cost will be HK$450 per person (HK$350 per person for alumni who graduated in 2006 or afterwards).

A group of 22 Purdue undergraduate students will visit Hong Kong for five days beginning on May 23, 2011. The students from various disciplines will learn about several institutions in Hong Kong, and will be led by Professor Sandra S. Liu, College of Health and Human Sciences. Professor Liu is also Director of Purdue's Center for Global Urban Sustainability, and Director for International Training at Purdue's Discovery Park.

PCHK will hold its second 2011 reunion dinner on Wednesday, 16th February 2011. Meeting us at the dinner will be Dr. Ragu Balakrishnan, Head of School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who will visit alumni in Hong Kong during February.

Dr. Balakrishnan received his bachelor degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and master and doctorate degrees from Stanford University. He joined the Purdue School of ECE in 1994, and became its Head in 2010. His primary research interests are in control, robotics, communication and signal processing, receiving the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research in 1997. Recognized as an excellent teacher by the School of ECE, he received the Spira Outstanding Teacher Award in 1998 and the Honeywell Award in 2001. In 2008, he was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar. Ms. Margarita Contreni, Senior Director of Development, will join him in the Hong Kong tour.

The reunion dinner will be held at Yat Tung Heen Restaurant, Basement 2, Eaton Hotel, 380 Nathan Road (at Pak Hoi Street), Jordan, Kowloon (Telephone 2782-1818). Dr. Banks has conducted widely acclaimed research in environmental and ecological engineering. After joining Purdue's School of Civil Engineering in 1997, she became its Head in 2006, and was awarded Jack and Kay Hockema Professorship earlier this year. Since becoming head, she has expanded the faculty, and has increased undergraduate enrollment by 42% in four years. American Society of Civil Engineers recently recognized her contributions with the prestigious Rudolf Hering Medal. Mr. Nathan Wight, Director of Development, will join her in the Asian tour.

Purdue professor wins Nobel Prize in chemistryOctober 6, 2010WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University chemist on Wednesday (Oct. 6) was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for creating a method to build complex organic molecules necessary for numerous purposes, from pharmaceutical manufacturing to electronics.

Ei-ichi Negishi (pronounced "H. Na-gE-shE"), the Herbert C. Brown Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, was a co-recipient of the prize with scientists Richard Heck of the University of Delaware in Newark and Akira Suzuki of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. They will share the $1.5 million award.

Purdue President France A. Córdova said the university was proud that Negishi and his work were recognized by the Nobel Prize committee."Ei-ichi Negishi's work in organic molecules is groundbreaking and inspiring, especially in its application for improving medicines and impacting lives," Córdova said. "We are very proud that he has been bestowed with this highest honor. We congratulate professor Negishi and celebrate this great accomplishment."

Negishi developed metal-based reactions, called palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling, that allow for easy and efficient synthesis of complex organic compounds. Examples of applications include drug manufacturing, fluorescent marking that has been essential for DNA sequencing and creating materials for thin LED displays. He discovered catalytic reactions using a number of transition metals that allow various organic compounds to be synthesized widely, efficiently and selectively for use in fields ranging from medicine to materials development. His work has resulted in dramatically reducing the cost of using such metals, like palladium, in the synthesis.

"Catalysts are not lost as they spur a chemical reaction, they are recycled and can be used over and over again," he said. "These transition metals are very expensive, but when they can be used millions to billions of times, it dramatically reduces the cost and makes the mass manufacturing of special, complex materials practical."Negishi likened the innovation to playing with a LEGO game, altering the building blocks of molecules and using transition metals as catalysts to promote the reactions needed for the synthesis."We found catalysts and created reactions that allow complex organic compounds to, in effect, snap together with other compounds to more economically and efficiently build desired materials," he said. "LEGOs can be combined to make things of any shape, size and color, and our reactions make this a possibility for organic compounds."

Purdue Introduces 11th President - President France A. Cordova

France A. Córdova will be Purdue's next president, succeeding Martin Jischke, who will retire June 30, 2007.

Purdue introduces 11th president

An internationally recognized astrophysicist who is chancellor of University of California, Riverside, was chosen Monday, May 7, as the 11th president of Purdue University.

The Purdue Board of Trustees, meeting on the Loeb Playhouse stage, voted unanimously to hire France A. Córdova and then brought her on stage to the music of "Hail Purdue."

Córdova, 59, has served at Riverside since 2002, coming from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she had been vice chancellor for research and a professor of physics for six years. Before that, she was the youngest person to hold the position of NASA chief scientist, working on projects that included the Hubble Space Telescope.

J. Timothy McGinley, chairman of Purdue's Board of Trustees, announced Córdova's selection after a seven-month search for a successor to Martin Jischke, who will retire on June 30 after serving as Purdue president since Aug. 14, 2000. Read more here.

BIDS FAREWELL TO HONG KONG ALUMNI
ON MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2007

In August 2000, Martin C. Jischke became Purdue's tenth president. On reaching retirement age, he will step down as Purdue president on June 30, 2007, after previously leading three other universities as their president.

During his tenure at Purdue, the university has experienced a sea of changes. A six-year Strategic Plan (2001-2007) was initiated, fine-tuned, and carried out by the faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The results have truly taken Purdue to the next level: Nearly 300 new faculty positions have been created, fund raising has been completed for 37 facility additions and renovations, and student financial aid has topped $400 million. One hallmark of the changes has been the creation of a $330 million Discovery Park, an interdisciplinary research facility drawing its faculty from across the campus.

The "Campaign for Purdue" was launched in 2002 to fund the Strategic Plan, with a goal of reaching US$1.3 billion by June 30, 2007. The original goal was increased to US$1.5 billion in 2005. As of today, Purdue has raised US$1.532 billion from alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations who see the value of investing the one of the world's preeminent universities.

In March-April, President Jischke will visit China and India for the last time as Purdue president, with stops in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The Event

The Purdue Club of Hong Kong, with the greatest pleasure, will hold a dinner on April 2 to honor the president, and to share the enthusiasm of the president who, during his seven-year leadership, has placed our alma mater one brick higher. Accompanying the president will be Dr. Michael Stitsworth, Director of Advancement, College of Engineering, and Mr. Matthew V. Sikora, coordinator, Programs in Asia.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue officials on Friday (Dec. 29) announced that with just over six months left to go in the Campaign for Purdue, the $1.5 billion fundraising goal has been surpassed, but the university will continue to seek campaign contributions through June.

Purdue has met or exceeded goals in four out of five of the campaign's target areas: student support, faculty support, academic program support and unrestricted gifts. Fundraising for facilities is at nearly 91 percent of its goal.........

Purdue to dedicate renovated facility for volleyball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will dedicate the new volleyball court in the recently renovated Intercollegiate Athletic Facility at 6:15 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 21) prior to the Boilermaker volleyball team's 8 p.m. match with Northwestern University.

Belin Court, the new playing floor designed specifically for volleyball, replaced the original court that had been in place since 1982. After $750,000 in renovations, the athletic facility features a new shock-absorbing floor; new bleachers, including a number of seat-back chairs, increasing the seating capacity 600 seats to 2,288; new scoreboards; banners; and other aesthetic changes.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Martin C. Jischke, whose visionary strategic plan and dynamic leadership took Purdue to new levels of excellence, will step down as the university's president on June 30, 2007.

Jischke announced his plans today (Friday, Aug. 4), stating that he believes the time will be right for both him and Purdue to move in new directions with the scheduled completion next June of both the strategic plan and the largest fund-raising campaign in Purdue history.

"My time at Purdue has been immensely satisfying for me, and I believe we have made some significant strides for both the university and the state of Indiana," Jischke said. "Completing the strategic plan goals and finishing the campaign will be my priorities in the year ahead, and I will devote all my energy to continuing the momentum we have established.

"After that, I would like to give myself and my family a chance to do some of the things we all enjoy. I also believe a great university like Purdue needs a change in leadership after a certain point. This is the right moment for Purdue and for me. We will have accomplished the goals we set. I am fortunate enough to be in excellent health, and I think Purdue is positioned to attract some exceptional talent to this job.

I went back to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, for a weekend visit -- the first time in almost 17 years, when I attended my wife's graduation commencement ceremony in 1988. I myself graduated in 1985 (bachelor) and 1987 (master).

There are a lot of changes on campus, like the new clock tower...

...and the new fountain on the mall...

Looking out from the new MSEE (Material Science and Electrical Engineering) building to Hovde Hall and the fountain....

But of course, the old EE building where I spent many of my school days is still standing next to the new building gracefully...

I stopped by the Black and Gold Game -- a tradition of the Purdue Boilermakers football team to mark the end of spring practice.

The black team quarterback throwing for a touchdown in the third quarter...

Chip Rutledge, Vice President for Research, showed me the new Discovery Park still under construction, at the ground of the old Married Student Housing. Home to Purdue's interdisciplinary research program, it is also an example of successful technology transfer, private-academic partnership and entrepreneurship. The centers for bioscience, nanotechnology and entrepreneurship are in operation, and the e-enterprise center will be coming soon.

My friend Mike Stitsworth and his wife Karen took me to visit to the new Dauch Alumni Center just south of Young Graduate House.

Evan Kelsay thinks it’s important for those in his generation to graduate and “hit the ground running” with their first jobs. To do that, he describes internships as “must requirements.”

Evan Kelsay covered a wide variety of stories for the Asia TV network in Hong Kong, including a museum exhibit, the opening of a water park, extreme weather events, and changing marriage customs.

After a summer of broadcast news reporting at the Asia TV network in Hong Kong, Kelsay has practiced what he preaches. “It was life changing both professionally and personally,” he says. “Plus, Hong Kong is my favorite city in the world right now.”

Kelsay, a senior from Indianapolis whose parents are Purdue alumni, was in Hong Kong from January to August last year. He took business and Chinese classes at City University of Hong Kong through May. “I began to understand the cultural divide between Eastern and Western approaches to business,” he says.

Before he even arrived in Hong Kong, Kelsay had arranged his internship at Asia TV with CEO Chan Wing-kee, a Purdue alumnus who owns a number of businesses.

“I had never done TV before, but I’ve had theater experience and have an outgoing personality,” says Kelsay, who cut his journalistic teeth at his high school newspaper and The Exponent. “I’d have been happy just being around the news operation and running coffee all summer.”

But as his semester was winding down, he made an appointment with the
TV station’s director and expressed his eagerness to take on any tasks needed. “The next thing I knew, I got a call from the station, and they said, “‘Go cover the story of the exhibit of dinosaur bones at the mall that has drawn four million spectators.’”
Kelsay caught on quickly. “After two or three stories, it felt fairly natural. It wasn’t long before I had an on-camera story on the news every evening.”

And he enjoyed every fast-paced minute.

“You have to figure out what the story is and get your sound bite. Then you write your story on the way back to the station. When you get there, you help the editors pick the best shots for the broadcast. It’s hustle and bustle and controlled chaos. I know high stress, but TV news is busy, active, and creative all at the same time,” he says. “It was more fun than any job I’ve ever had.”

Kelsay, who also has had internships with Clear Channel and Indianapolis radio station WFBQ (Q-95), plans a career in journalism and chose a management major to gain an understanding of the business side of journalism and the financial marketplace. “I want to know the money issues involved with running a business so I can understand what’s going on in someone else’s mind and how to react to it,” he says.

To fill in his already packed resume, Kelsay thought his next internship foray should be in the realm of politics, and by the start of his final semester at Krannert he’d snagged a communication position with the state Democratic party. He’d next like to work in a 2008 presidential campaign.

“With the November 2006 elections coming up, there will be opportunities,” Kelsay says. “I’d like to get some political experience to complement my business background because it seems that half the stories I covered at The Exponent had either a political or business side to them.”

Then, Kelsay figures he’ll land his first real job, possibly back in Asia doing TV news again.

“I want to work in journalism, and China’s the place to be for my generation,” he says. “After working outside the country for a few years, I’ll be better positioned for breaking in to a medium or large American TV market.

“And in a global economy, I’d rather pay my dues in Hong Kong than in Boise.”

At the dinner, Professor Liu (Director, International Training for Discovery Park) and Professor Perrella (School of Pharmacy) will give a short talk on GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) in food and drug industry and hospital management - a pertinent current topic since many hospitals in Hong Kong, Macau and the Pearl River Delta are now on high alert for a possible strike of H5N1 bird flu pandemic. During their stay in China, the Purdue professors will visit Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Zhejiang University related to GMP training.

GMP, originally started in the pharmaceutical industry about 40 years ago, consists of concepts and practices to minimize contaminations from physical, chemical and microbiological sources. It was quickly accepted by the food industry and then by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since the enactment of GMP in 1980s, it has gradually gained acceptance by the food and drug industries and governments worldwide.

Prof. James D. Lehman (Professor of Educational Technology, and Head of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, College of Education) will be in HK during November 11-20. He will visit with faculty and administrators at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, in Taipo, to explore collaboration between HKIEd and Purdue. He would like to meet with Purdue alumni in HK to gain an understanding of various facets of HK. After HK, he will visit Taiwan before returning to WL.

Prof. JoAnn I. Phillion, a member of his department at Purdue and currently on sabbatical leave, is a visiting professor at HKIEd.

Charles Mok has suggested that a number of alumni meet with Professors Lehman and Phillion. Since Charles will be out-of-town during Prof. Lehman's visit, he has asked me to organize a meeting with the two Purdue visitors.

Financial Times ranks Krannert executive MBA among world's best

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – One of Purdue University's Krannert School of Management executive MBA programs – the International Master's in Management (IMM) – placed 16th worldwide in rankings released today (Monday, Oct. 24) by the Financial Times.
The program is a collaboration among the Krannert School and graduate business schools in the Netherlands, Hungary and Germany.

"You can't do business – or business education – today without a global outlook and global respect," said Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management. "The Financial Times' top 20 ranking of Krannert's IMM program is a solid endorsement of the program and how it is valued worldwide."

The publication ranked the Krannert IMM program No. 7 in the United States and first among American public universities. The program placed No. 7 among European programs as well. The Krannert IMM program ranked No. 11 in 2004 and No. 14 in 2003.

Wilbur Lewellen, director of the Krannert School's executive education programs and Herman C. Krannert Distinguished Professor of Management, said, "The Financial Times' ranking is evidence once more that the IMM program is world class. The program's design, combining a series of two-week residencies with internet-supported assignments between residencies, has been a model for international executive MBA programs for more than a decade."

The 2005 Financial Times rankings included 75 schools in the United States, Europe and Asia. The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School retained the No. 1 overall ranking for the fifth consecutive year, followed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's business school, and the London Business School. Notre Dame's Mendoza School of Business tied for No. 37. No other Indiana business schools were ranked.

In determining its rankings, the Financial Times used two sets of questionnaires – one for the schools and one for the alumni of their executive programs. The main ranking criterion, the British publication writes, "is the career success of alumni, which takes into account the career progress of alumni from the period before they started their executive MBA to the present day – usually five years. The two main components of this are salary levels today and the percentage salary increase the alumni have experienced between the two dates."

Students in the IMM complete their executive MBAs on a part-time basis while maintaining their employment, whereas students in full-time programs must either take a leave of absence or resign from their employers.

The Krannert School's partners in the IMM program are Tilburg University in the Netherlands, Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, and the German International Graduate School of Management and Administration in Hanover, Germany.

In September, the Wall Street Journal for the second straight year ranked the Krannert School's full-time MBA program the No. 1 program serving corporate recruiters from a regional base. In October 2005, Business Week ranked Krannert's domestic executive MBA program No. 18 worldwide.

Krannert offers three executive MBA programs, the oldest of which dates back to 1983. The school also offers a variety of non-degree executive programs, all on the West Lafayette campus and at corporate training facilities.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Krannert School of Management executive MBA degree program placed 18th worldwide in rankings released Thursday (Oct. 13) by Business Week.

The 2005 rankings are based on the results of 163 surveys received from directors of leadership and executive development at companies internationally. The rankings are available online.
"The top 20 worldwide ranking for our executive MBA program is a confirmation of our commitment to provide a high-quality option for students to earn an MBA without an interruption in their careers," said Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management. "Our executive MBA is a tremendous option for active managers. It offers a high-quality education that meshes with the schedules of individuals and their companies."

Krannert Executive Education Programs offer three executive MBAs through a combination of distance-learning and part-time residence on campus. The Krannert School began offering executive education in 1983.

Wilbur G. "Bill" Lewellen, director of the Krannert School's Executive Education Programs and Herman C. Krannert Distinguished Professor of Management, said the Business Week ranking recognizes Purdue's continuing commitment to combining on-campus and online education.

"Our program has been a model for other executive programs for years," Lewellen said. "We believe in solid coursework that provides smart, busy people with flexible options to further their careers and provide leadership in their companies and organizations."

Northwestern received the No. 1 Business Week ranking of executive MBA programs. Notre Dame is No. 20. No other Indiana colleges were ranked among the top 20 executive MBA programs or among the custom, non-degree programs.

Business Week ranked Krannert's executive education programs No. 16 in 2003, the last time the survery was conducted.

Krannert's full-time MBA program was ranked No. 1 by regional corporate recruiters for the second straight year in a Wall Street Journal survey published in September.

Krannert Executive Education Programs offer an executive MBA, an international master's in management and a weekend MBA program.

Jischke named chairman of Association of American Universities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke has been selected as the next chairman of the Association of American Universities, an organization that represents the country's most prestigious research universities.

Jischke was elected by the association's board of directors at its annual fall membership meeting today (Tuesday, Oct. 11) at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Jischke's term will end in October 2006. During the past year, Jischke served as the association's vice chairman.

As chairman, Jischke will retain his seat on the 11-member executive committee, which is charged with general oversight and functioning of the association. The executive committee is selected by the board of directors, which is made up of the presidents of the 62 public and private research universities in this country and in Canada that are association members.

Nils Hasselmo, the association's president, said Jischke will be responsible for charting the course of the organization over the next year.

"As chairman, Dr. Jischke will have a major role in setting the agenda and influencing the direction of the association," he said. "He will have a very visible role as a leader in the university research community."

Jischke will function as one of the chief spokespeople for the association and will help represent research universities with the federal government. He also will have an international role, maintaining the relationship between the Association of American Universities and other similar groups around the world and will travel abroad to speak on behalf of the association.

For his term as chairman, Jischke listed three main priorities.

"First, we must continue to work with the various federal agencies and others to advance our nation's research agenda," he said. "I believe increasing our commitment to the discovery of new knowledge is critical to America's future. Second, I think the member universities must find ways to confront the economic and social barriers that have kept many young people of ability from accessing the vast opportunities that our institutions provide. Third, but most immediately, we must find a successor to Nils Hasselmo, who has announced his retirement as president. Dr. Hasselmo has provided outstanding leadership for AAU, and it's crucial that we identify an individual with great talent and a strong commitment to higher education to assume the presidency. I look forward to a challenging year."

Hasselmo, who will retire in February, said one of the main reasons Jischke was selected is because he has a strong reputation as a leader of two top-level research universities – Purdue and previously as president of Iowa State University.

"Martin has the full confidence of the members of the board of directors," Hasselmo said. "He is a fine leader, with fine values and high standards. I look forward to working with him in formulating policies on these issues."

The Association of American Universities was founded in 1900 to strengthen and standardize doctoral programs in the United States. The association provides a forum for the development and implementation of institutional and national policies promoting strong programs in academic research and scholarship and undergraduate, graduate and professional education.

Purdue has been a member since 1958.

Purdue needs more partnership with Asia

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.

It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.

Every morning, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.

It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better start running.

The message in this proverb is what Richard Cosier, Dean of Purdue's Krannert School of Management, has in mind when he steps off of the Northwest Airlines plane in Beijing, China, at 8:30 a.m. This is Cosier's second trip to the Mainland this year to help secure his school's future in Purdue's world of pre-eminence.

Cosier knows China is more than a threat and customer for the U.S.; China is an opportunity. That's why he is placing "fostering educational exchanges with China" at the top of his priorities list right now, just two weeks after celebrating Krannert's No. 12 undergraduate ranking in USNews.

Cosier knows it. President Martin Jischke knows it, too. After a trip to India and Hong Kong last fall, Jischke was the one who assembled the team for what's being called the Asia Initiative.

When you look around campus and your classes, you'll see no shortage of students from the Mainland and India. And these students represent the best of the best from their home countries. As Thomas Friedman pointed out in his book, "The World is Flat," in China you're one in a million � here, there are 1,300 people just like you.

However, we aren't returning the favor in the two places where opportunities flow and will continue to flow like milk and honey for generations.

Since 2001, the U.S. has increasingly closed its borders to foreign exchange students. While European countries announce surges in Chinese enrollment, applications from the Mainland to American graduate schools dropped 45 percent in 2004.

Purdue knows where future opportunities for business and the sciences lie. Quite frankly, if they are serious about securing their future, there's no reason why Krannert students wanting to study abroad shouldn't be looking at China first. The same thing goes for India and students studying engineering, IT, etc. As of four years ago, 400 out of the Forbes 500 companies have invested in more than 2,000 projects in China. The opportunities are there if we just have the courage to grab them.

But less than 10 percent of study abroad students go to Asia. We're talking about two thirds of the world's population that is not on any of our radars when we think outside the U.S.

Jischke, Cosier and many more Purdue staff and faculty are trying to change that. They are working hard towards their goal. But it's going to take more than just visits, partnerships and exchanges with Chinese and Indian universities. It's going to take things all students need. Things like scholarship money, core class credit and substantial credit for internships.

Cosier knows how important this trip is for his school. Now all he has to do is get everyone else to listen.

We received the following delightful information from President Martin Jischke of Purdue University:

"A strong indicator of excellence came in August with the release of U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of university undergraduate programs. Purdue remains among America's top 25 public universities in the rankings, and the College of Engineering and Krannert School of Management continue to shine.

"Eleven Purdue engineering programs rank in the magazine's top 20, with seven of them in the top 10. Overall, Purdue was ranked eighth in the nation among doctoral-granting institutions, tied with Carnegie Mellon and Cornell.

"The Krannert School jumped five spots in the rankings into a tie for 12th with five other programs. U.S. News ranked Indiana University's Kelley School of Business 11th and Notre Dame's Mendoza School of Business in a tie for 22nd. So the state of Indiana can boast of having three of the nations's top 25 undergraduate business schools....

"Purdue announced two important new research centers for Discovery Park in August. The Energy Center will focus on research to develop future power sources, including methods that use solar and nuclear energy, clean-coal technology, bio-energy and wind turbines. Thanks to Senator Richard Lugar, the recently passed federal energy bill identifies the new center to share in future funding for coal-related research. A new Cyberinfrastructure Center will unite computer resources at all Purdue campuses, enhancing research and education, setting the stage for more federal funding and ultimately boosting Indiana's economy. Thanks to Lilly Endowment support, the Cyber Center will place the University at a competitive advantage by accelerating discovery, which will lead to new avenues of research."

Purdue and Liberal Arts stage dedication for theaters, arts building

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University dedicated two theaters and its new visual and performing arts building today (Monday, Sept. 12), setting the stage for a place where art and technology can meet.

The $43.4 million Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts is the College of Liberal Arts' home to the four divisions that make up visual and performing arts: art and design, music, dance, and theater.

"This building is a testament to the breadth of the arts at Purdue and our own emphasis on bringing technology to the stage," said President Martin C. Jischke. "This is the first building at Purdue named after an international business leader, a visionary who helped bring the market economy to China. The donors include a leader in the video game industry, a former Purdue president and engineer, a professional in the pharmacy industry, and a mechanical engineer. Art plays a part in every discipline and in every heart, and this building provides a place where designers, artists and scientists can experiment with art to improve the human condition.

"The arts have always played an important role on campus, even when they were scattered among different buildings and facilities. Now, the artists can create, design and solve problems under one roof using some of the latest technology."

The fund raising was completed last fall, thanks to an anonymous $4 million gift. At the request of the donor, the building was named after Yue-Kong Pao (pronounced u-KONG bou), who died in 1991.

Tom Adler, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, said the new facility has something for everyone.

"Within this building, teachers, students and patrons will come together in an arts community that melds art and technology with the spark of creativity and imagination," Adler said. "Not only will the public be engaged by performances and exhibits here, the state will benefit from the imagination, ingenuity and insight that are fostered here."

Within the Indiana economy, for example, there are nearly 50,000 people working in arts-related businesses, according to a study conducted by Americans for the Arts, which is a nonprofit organization advancing the arts. Among those working in Indiana are artists trained at Purdue.

"This building provides a place where we can exhibit the fine arts, such as painting, sculpture and drawing," said David Sigman, professor and head of visual and performing arts. "But the building also is its own canvas where artists and scientists can work together to solve problems. For example, new studio space allows industrial designers to create and enhance furniture and appliances that are a part of our daily lives."

Pao Hall not only provides space for interdisciplinary collaboration, but it also offers opportunities to use some of the latest technology, such as in computerized weaving. The new dance space allows dancers to utilize computer technology in motion-capture video imaging, which is used to produce video games.

"Students will learn how art can be used to solve problems, and the opportunities provided by this building will prepare Purdue graduates for careers in interior and industrial design, sound and lighting, and printmaking, to name just a few," Sigman said.

The 166,700-square-foot hall is located at Marsteller and Wood streets. The building, which received $20.75 million in state appropriations, opened in fall 2003 for classes in art and design and dance. Purdue also contributed $5 million, and the remainder came from private gifts.

Purdue has just finished work on the second phase of the building – two theaters and space for costume design and storage, dressing rooms, prop storage and scenery construction as well as studios and workshop space for classes in theater, music and art education. Previously, the visual and performing arts areas were located in Stewart Center, Lambert Field House, Matthews Hall and in five Quonset huts that dated back to World War II.

The Nancy T. Hansen Theatre, a 300-seat proscenium, will take the place of the Experimental Theatre in Stewart Center and nearly double its seating capacity. Former Purdue President Arthur G. Hansen of Zionsville, Ind., in September 2002 announced an outright and deferred gift of $1.8 million to name the theater in his wife's honor. Arthur married Nancy Tucker in 1972 during his tenure as Purdue's eighth president (1971-82). Nancy Tucker Hansen died in 2003.

"Both theaters will offer incredible artistic opportunities for production," said Russell Jones, associate professor of theater and chair of the division. "The Hansen Theatre has a grid 65 feet above the stage that will allow us to quickly fly scenic elements on and off the stage area. The stage is fully trapped, meaning the floor is easily removable, so we can sink props or scenery into the floor of the stage."

Directors will be able to experiment with different entrances and exits for plays with stage flooring that moves and with the new computer controlled lighting and sound technologies in the lighting and sound booth.

"The stage opening alone, with an increase in height from 12 feet to 28 feet, allows us to pursue productions that require two-story settings," Jones said. "Even though the size has increased, we've captured the intimacy of the actor-audience relationship that was appreciated in the smaller Experimental Theater."

In February, Purdue Theatre will present "The College Widow," written by Purdue alumnus George Ade, as the first production in the Nancy T. Hansen Theatre.

"The Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre is truly a teaching theater," Jones said. "This flexible theater seats 100-150 people depending on its configuration. Directors can divide the audience seating or shape it to an arena, proscenium or three-quarter form. There also is more room for better lighting effects and an improved technical gallery."

The Mallett Theatre will replace the smaller Black Box Theater that was located in Creative Arts Building 3. Gordon Mallett of Zionsville, Ind., a retired Eli Lilly and Co. quality assurance director, studied the sciences while at Purdue, earning a doctorate in microbiology in 1956. Carole is a retired school administrator who took undergraduate courses at Purdue before earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Bradley and Northern Illinois universities. The Malletts pledged outright and deferred gifts of $770,000 for the building and also contributed time to the visual and performing arts building fund-raising campaign.

A green room also has been named for Herbert and Janice Wilson of Coralville, Iowa, in honor of their $500,000 gift in 2000. Herbert, who earned his bachelor of science degree in 1951 from Purdue, is owner and president of Start Ups Unlimited Inc. in Coralville.

Portraits of the Malletts and Nancy T. Hansen also were unveiled in the new theaters at the dedication.

A gallery in the building is named for Patti and Rusty Rueff (pronounced ROOF), of Burlingame, Calif., in recognition of their $200,000 gift toward the building. Rusty received a bachelor's degree in radio and television from Purdue in 1984 and earned a master's degree in counseling in 1986. He is now executive vice president of human resources at the Redwood City, Calif.-based game developer and publisher Electronic Arts, where he is responsible for finding and hiring the talent to create and produce the company's top-selling video games, such as Sims.

In March 2004, the Rueffs also made a deferred commitment of $5 million – the single largest gift in the College of Liberal Arts' history – for the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, which was named in their honor. Previously, a classroom had been named after the Rueffs' godson, Noah B. Putnam, in honor of a $50,000 gift. Rusty, originally from Jeffersonville, Ind., is a member of Purdue's fund-raising campaign committee for the Visual and Performing Arts Building and the College of Liberal Arts Dean's Advisory Council. Patti is an event-planning consultant in California and a graduate of Wood Business School in Manhattan. She worked 24 years for PepsiCo Ind., including 20 years as executive assistant to the CEO and chairman of the board of directors.

Yue-Kong Pao was the founder of the World-Wide Shipping Company, an international oil tanker charter business. He became one of the wealthiest men in the world and was known as a shipping magnate, praised as one of the century's top 10 in that field.

Pao was a friend and adviser to Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, and he was responsible for arranging President Ronald Reagan's visit to China in 1983. Pao, who fled his homeland when the communists came to power in 1949, advised Deng to change the country to a market economy, according to the book "Three Tigers and Purdue: Stories of Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan and an American University."

Pao's two daughters graduated from Purdue. Anna Pao Sohmen is a 1966 graduate in psychology and sociology, and received an honorary doctorate from Purdue in 2003. Bessie Pao Woo graduated in 1971 with a degree in interior design. Anna and her husband, Helmut Sohmen, from Hong Kong, were at the dedication and unveiling of Pao's bust. Helmut Sohmen is president and chairman of World-Wide Shipping Company.

Purdue has one of the largest international student populations, and students from China began attending Purdue during the early 20th century. This fall Purdue has more than 750 students from China studying on the West Lafayette campus.

The Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts, which is home to Purdue Theatre and the Purdue Repertory Dance Company, was created in 1966. There are more than 900 undergraduates in the department, 60 graduate students and 40 faculty members. The department also offers a master of fine arts degree for students in its divisions of art and design and theater.

More than 8,000 Purdue students annually enroll in visual and performing arts classes. The studio arts include painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, textiles, sculpture, ceramics and metals. Other popular areas of study are industrial, interior and visual communications design. Visual communication design includes the creations of logos, corporate identity systems, package design and motion graphics.

Visual and Performing Arts is one of 11 departments in the College of Liberal Arts, which is one of the largest colleges on campus. The other departments are communication; English; foreign languages and literatures; health and kinesiology; history; philosophy; political science; psychological sciences; sociology and anthropology; and speech, language and hearing sciences. The college also is home to 13 interdisciplinary programs.

Sixteen Purdue alumni, students and friend attended the Wine Tasting Party at the Butterfield's Club on Friday, 27 May 2005. It was an occasion for the Purdue attendees to get acquainted and exchange notes between the campus and HK. Thanks to Emily Tse who made many calls to alumni and current students, resulting in the respectable turnout. We also thank Ken Wai who registered the attendees as guests at the party.

Among the attendees were current officers of Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) on Purdue campus: Hilton Tam (Vice President), Calvin Kong (Secretary), Lam Chi Keung (Treasurer), and Alice Choi (Committee Member). They have expressed willingness to work with Purdue Club of Hong Kong (PCHK) to exchange relevant news and, if appropriate, distribute notices of their counterparts to their own club members. When HKSA members return to work in HK, they will be the new blood of PCHK.

Wine Tasting Party at Buttterfield's Club

on Friday, 27th May 2005

Before the summer travel season begins, PCHK is holding an informal gathering for Boilermakers in Hong Kong on Friday, 27th May 2005. The venue will be at Butterfield's Club, and the time will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

If you would like to get together with fellow Boilers, please inform Kenneth Wai (Pharmacy 1963) by email at hinds@hk.net, or by fax at 2567-1340, not later than Tuesday, 24th May 2005. Ken will register you as his guests to attend the free wine tasting and free chatting among friends. You pay only for snacks and any wines which you may take home.

Butterfield's Club (Tel: 2968-5555) is at Dorset House, King's Road, Quarry Bay (a few minutes' walk from Exit A at MTR Quarry Bay Station).
